Calling all crunchies

J seems to finally be getting over his cold. We thought he was coming down with an ear infection because starting Saturday he was really tugging on it. I've read that isn't always an indication, and usually it's not, but since he was sick and suddenly paying way too much attention to his left ear, I thought it could be a sign although he didn't seem fussy or anything else. When that happened I started thinking about how I may need to take him to the doctor and get an antibiotic but then wanted to do something in the meantime. I was then thinking about home remedies in leui of medicine.

And that's where my a la natural blogger friends would really come in handy. I know some of you out there probably know great alternatives to Western medicine. If you have any tried and true home remedies for ear infections I'd love to hear them!

I don't know any remedies for ear infections, Cara, but you might also want to be keeping an eye on his gums. Sometimes ear pulling can be an early warning sign of teething (and babies CAN start teething at 2-3 months).

I hope you're all back to 100% really soon!!! :)

It might be a teething thing. But if he isn't displaying any other teething symptoms, prolly not.

What my mom did for ear infections - put garlic in his ear. Buy the geltabs of garlic, you know, the kind that have the clear coating with liquid inside, that you can open and get a dropper and put a few drops in his ears.

Your babe will stink very much like garlic, but my mom swears by it.

^^ I secound the garlic. My mom use to use an acual garlic clove and heat in up on a grill. Cut it in half and wrap it in cotton and place inside ( well not inside..but in the opening on the ear ) while it was still warm.

It worked like a charm.

We have used those Simalison ear drops on the boys (and myself!) before and they seem to work pretty good. Took care of it anyways. It's all natural too (we used it cuz I didn't want to take them to the doc for a ear ache though, not sure how well it would work on a actual infection)

I'm not a nutjob about breastfeeding or anything, but a lot of the gals I used to chat with at's forums swore by breastmilk.

I'm sure there is lots of info out there for the googling.

We were lucky to never have an ear infection. But, every single "cold" Kieran had as an infant and young toddler (yeah, cuz, at 2 1/2 he's gotten old) were related to teething. Rub your fingers along his top gums and see if there is any sign of action.

How's he doing now, Cara? I'm kind of tuning in late on this one, I think.

The thing is, most ear infections are viral so antibiotics aren't going to help anyhow. In fact, my pediatrician has stopped RX'ing antibiotics for ear infections unless he's certain it is bacterial.

OK, that said: An small amount of slightly warmed olive oil in the ear can help soothe his ear canal. I just pour some into a teaspoon and then heat it ever-so-slighly with a lighter underneath. Then I suck it up into a dropper and put a few drops into my kids' ears. Of course I always test it first to be sure it's not too hot! :)

I hope your little guy is feeling better!

olive oil.
a few drops in each hear.
bring any fluid to the top and it evaporates off. and my ped has no prob with it.
the health food store sells willow and garlic ear oil but it essentailly does the same.
you can use onion oil and though it stinks it works extremely well, but you have to roast the onion and that is too much like work.
also. good old breastmilk will cure ear infections as well as pink eye.
