You did wha??

At our last yoga class the teacher was telling us how she had babysat a friend's baby. The mom didn't leave a bottle because she said the baby wouldn't be hungry before they got home. And as you'd expect when there is no bottle backup, the baby was starving. So what did this yoga lady do? Have you ever heard of sugar titties? Well I haven't. She put some sugar water on her nipples and let the baby faux nurse.

Am I a prude or does this seem weird? I guess not so weird if you had prior permission but she said her friend couldn't believe she did that. I love my friends but I'm not sure I'd like them to take it upon themselves to let my baby suck their dry boobies. Guess that's something I have to remember to specify on our babysitter checklist. DO NOT LET MY BABY SUCK ON YOUR NIPPLES. That might call for a nanny-cam.

Okay, THAT IS SO WRONG! My sister Becky was Breastfeeding when she came out to watch Gavin while I was having all those problems last year. We talked about it later and I think I would have been okay with her breastfeeding him. It probably would have kept him breastfeeding. But she is my sister and she had milk to give.
If a ever heard a friend trying to breastfeed Gav without asking me first. I probably would have called the police. EWWWWWWWWWWW! Just wrong!

Hmmm...I don't think it's as weird as some people do. Mainly because I'm privy to some information that doesn't come up in your normal everday conversations, lol. After discovering just how many people do this sort of thing, it doesn't surprise me one bit. Although admittedly, I've never heard of "sugar titties", lol and it's a little more odd because the yoga lady wasn't actually lactating.

I'd definately get permission from someone before nursing their baby though!

Let me just say ew. EW. Maybe a friend or family member, maybe, and only if they were lactating. None of this "sugar titties" stuff!

p.s. I am a frequent lurker on your blog...love it! I should post more often!

i have not heard it called sugar titties...but i have heard of it being done...

i do not think its weird or strange or not ok...i, personally, would prefer a phone call to make sure that it was ok, etc first...but if its someone that i trust enough to have my child in their home without me, then i trust them enough to feed my child when necessary...

maybe i am just strange...

peace...

After re-reading my own post, wanted to clarify incase wasn't clear. I am 100% behind using someone elses breastmilk, and another trusted woman nursing my baby if there was a need, but what struck me as odd was that she did NOT have permission nor asked first and she wasn't lactacting. So I guess it's the same as a pacifier but I feel that is an extremely personal thing that the parents need to have agreed to first. I got the feeling from her, her friend was not happy. I totally trust my MIL to watch J and take great care of him, but doesn't mean I want her nipples in his mouth (shudders).

Well my sis was breastfeeding when she watched Cole for us once or twice when he was little. At one point we talked about whether she could breastfeed him, and she said she would if we ran out of pumped milk and he was humgry. It never happened, and although I would have thought it a bit strange, I think it would've been okay, 1)because she's my sister 2) because it would have SATISFIED HIS HUNGER! But sugar titties? ugh guh ugh. Just wrong. I could see how someone might think that's kinda molestation-ish, don't you (not that that was her intenion, I'm sure, but....)

I just don't think it was right for her to put some water and sugar on her boob and stick it in his mouth. She should have called and checked out what the mother would want her to do. I mean I could understand if she had some milk, but her boobies were dry!

I think she effectively ended the chance for any further babysitting jobs!

Yaw... just wrong. My friend's mom admitted to switching babies (my friend and her mom's friends' baby... ug, does that make sense?) when they were lactating. I don't think I'd have a problem with it as long as there was a need and the person was lactating and, MOST IMPORTANATLY, prior permission was granted. This sugar-titties thing is just wrong, though! Yikes!

I've heard of a wet nurse, but let's face it, in this day and age, that kind of stuff is unheard of. I'm a bit freaked.

pioneer days? yes.
times of famine? yes.
holding a baby off for a couple hours while mom's away? um, no.

EW! Why couldn't she let the baby suck on her finger if that was all she was going to do? Why must it have been her nipple? I think it is gross and slightly perverted!

Ummm, I can just say no comment cuz that is totally creepy. For me, I would think it is totally weird if any body but me BF Ry. Unless of course we are on a deserted island and I had no milk left and that was the final choice (eat or die). We always had a back up can of formula just in case there was no milk pumped or I wasn't around.

the hell?! i could see if there was a close relationship there and she'd gotten permission. and was LACTATING. otherwise - NO. holy moly. and you made me get a visual of my MIL's boobs, too. thanks.

WTF?! Weird. Really really weird. Haven't these people heard of pacifiers, or a finger to suck on? I'm adding that to my babysitter checklist right now. Although it will probably be THEM thinking I'm the crazy one when I specify "No sugar titties" in my list of toddler care instructions.

OH MY GOD!! I'd like to think I am pretty open-minded, but WTF I would hurt someone if they did that to my boy! I understand the whole skin thing with a bf baby, but couldn't she have just used a finger for him to suck on dipped in the same sugar water?

Yeah that's not right. One thing to put sugar water in a bottle or sippy cup, TOTALLY another (think The Hand that Rocks the Cradle) to faux nurse.

Yeah, I have to agree with everyone here- just not right. If the mom had left the baby like ALL DAY LONG with no food supply- I could see doing something to feed him. But even giving the baby a bottle of formula would be better than letting him suck on SUGAR, let alone on some weird ladies dry nipples.
I can just hear a loud unanimous EEEEeeew!

sugar titties--I've heard that term all my life. Don't know if it's southern influence or midwest but it was definitely not uncommon in days past. However, the thought of someone actually DOING that is just too weird and especially without permission!!! Yuck! It's too intimate and personal, and it's your baby, and that's just yuck.

EEK! I'd be horrified! But then again, I'd never leave my baby without any backup food so it wouldn't be an issue! Hellooooo??? What if she got caught in traffic, or got into a horrible accident and never came back to nurse her baby?!

i am a wet nurse. there is not a problem with it at all. back in the day many people were brought up by nannies and they nursed the kids they watched. did you ever watch the movie Roots? the black women always nursed the rich white kids. do you see anything wrong with them? hey there are many moms who want their kids to have breast milk and they can not give it to them. i even nurse adults who have medical problems and need the pureness of breast milk. doctors say if you get breast milk it is better than cows milk

Anonymous -

A few things...1. she wasn't lactating. Totally different if she were, a completely different ball game. 2. She didn't have her friends permission and her friend was weirded out by it. In that case it was crossing the line.

Believe me as pro-BF as I am, I am totally fine w/wet nurses and if there were is a time I am unable to BF my son then I am all for it. Permission from me must be granted and you must be lactating.
